Do I need a referral to see a gynaecologist in Brisbane?

Dr Jillian (Jill) Cox Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Belle Women's Health 1 June 2026

It's one of the most common questions we hear—especially from women booking their first appointment.

The short answer is: ideally yes, but not always.

Here's what you need to know so you can feel confident about your next step.

Do I need a referral?

In Australia, a GP referral is required if you'd like to claim a Medicare rebate when seeing a gynaecologist.

Most private gynaecology practices will ask for a referral before your first appointment.

Can I still book without one?

Yes, but it is usually better for you to have one by the time you come for your appointment. It also helps your specialist triage your appointment, especially for urgent matters.

You can choose to see a private gynaecologist without a referral—but there are two important things to be aware of:

  • You won't be eligible for a Medicare rebate
  • Some specialists may still ask for a referral before confirming your booking. Having a referral also ensures your specialist spends less time asking for your information and prior results in your consultation, and more time treating you

In practice, most women find it simpler (and more cost-effective) to see their GP first.

Why do I need a referral?

A referral isn't just paperwork—it helps coordinate your care.

Your GP includes important details such as:

  • your symptoms and medical history
  • any recent test results or imaging
  • the reason you're being referred

This allows your gynaecologist to focus on what matters most in your appointment, and helps keep your care connected over time.

A referral isn't just paperwork—it helps coordinate your care.

How long does a referral last?

  • A GP referral is usually valid for 12 months from the date you are seen by the specialist (not the date the referral was written)
  • After your first appointment, follow-up care for the same issue is typically covered under that referral

If your referral expires, your GP can simply provide a new one.

Do I need a referral for every visit?

No.

You'll typically need a referral for your first appointment, and then it covers your ongoing care—unless:

  • the referral expires (usually at 12 months)
  • you're seeing a different specialist
  • you have a new or unrelated concern

What should I do next?

If you're thinking about seeing a gynaecologist, the best first step is to book a quick appointment with your GP and request a referral.

You can also schedule an appointment with your gynaecologist first so long as you have your referral prior to your visit.

At Belle Women's Health, we understand that reaching out for specialist care can feel like a big step—especially if it's your first visit. Our team is here to make the process simple, supportive and comfortable from the very beginning.
