Choosing a Private Obstetrician in Brisbane — what first-time mums need to know

Finding out you're pregnant is exciting — and often a little overwhelming, especially if it's your first baby. One of the earliest decisions you'll be asked to make is how you'd like to be cared for during pregnancy and birth. A common question we hear is: should I see a private obstetrician in Brisbane? The answer depends on what matters most to you.

What is a private obstetrician?

An obstetrician is a specialist doctor who looks after you and your baby throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early postnatal period.

If you choose private obstetric care, you'll see the same obstetrician for your appointments, and they (or someone from their on-call team in some circumstances) will be involved in your delivery as well. This is one of the main reasons women choose private care — the sense of knowing who is looking after you, and building a relationship over time.

Private vs public care — what's the difference?

In Australia, both public and private maternity care are high quality, and both are very safe options. The main differences are around how your care is delivered, rather than the standard of care itself.

In the public system

  • Usually covered by Medicare with no additional gap payments
  • You may see different midwives or doctors throughout your pregnancy
  • Your birth is managed by the team on duty at the time
  • Postnatal rooms are often shared, and partners generally can't stay overnight

In private care

  • You choose your obstetrician and your private delivery hospital
  • You'll see the same doctor throughout your pregnancy
  • You'll typically have a private room after birth, with partners able to stay
  • There are out-of-pocket costs, even with private health insurance

For some women, continuity and choice are really important. For others, the public system feels like a better fit. There isn't a single "right" option — it's about what feels right for you.

Why do some first-time mums choose a private obstetrician?

Everyone's reasons are different, but there are a few common themes we hear:

  • "I like the idea of knowing my doctor." Seeing the same obstetrician throughout your pregnancy can feel reassuring, especially when everything is new.
  • "I want more personalised care." Private appointments are often longer and more tailored to you.
  • "I want more choice around my birth." Some women prefer more input into decisions, including where they deliver and who is involved.
  • "I feel more comfortable having a specialist involved." Even in straightforward pregnancies, it can be reassuring to know a specialist is leading your care if anything unexpected comes up.

What about the downsides?

Private obstetric care isn't for everyone, and it's important to understand the whole picture:

  • Cost — there are usually out-of-pocket fees, which vary depending on your obstetrician and your health fund.
  • Planning ahead — most private health insurance requires a 12-month waiting period for pregnancy cover.
  • It's not "better" care — just different — many women have excellent experiences in the public system.

For some families, the decision is simple. For others, it takes a bit of weighing up.

How do you choose the right obstetrician?

If you do decide to explore private obstetric care in Brisbane, choosing the right obstetrician is a very personal decision. It's not just about qualifications — although those are important — it's also about how you feel with them. Some things to think about:

  • Do you feel comfortable asking questions?
  • Do they listen and explain things clearly?
  • Are they aligned with your preferences around birth where possible?
  • Which hospital do they deliver at?
  • What are the expected costs, and are they explained upfront?

It's completely okay to meet with more than one obstetrician before deciding. Most women have a sense quite quickly of who feels like the right fit.

When should you book?

As early as possible. In Brisbane, many private obstetricians book out very quickly — it's not uncommon for popular obstetricians to be fully booked by around 6 weeks gestation.

If you're considering private obstetric care, it's worth organising your referral and first appointment as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test, so you have the best chance of seeing your preferred doctor.

How we can support you at Belle

Most private obstetric care in Brisbane is centred around a single obstetrician, with a list of trusted providers you're referred out to along the way. While these networks are valuable, it can mean attending multiple clinics, repeating your history, and navigating different teams who don't always communicate directly. Our model is different. At Belle, we bring together obstetricians, midwives, obstetric and gynaecological imaging, and perinatal mental health care in one place — so your care feels more continuous and coordinated.

  • Supported by an in-house team
  • Scans and imaging in Belle's rooms
  • The same sonographer where possible
  • Midwifery support before & after birth
  • Home visits if you prefer
  • Integrated perinatal mental health care

For many women, particularly first-time mums, this creates a very different experience.

Instead of moving between providers, your care feels like one continuous journey — with a team that already knows you.

That continuity becomes especially valuable during pregnancy and in the postnatal period, when things can change quickly and having familiar, connected support makes a real difference.
